CRAFTINESS: Upside-down Planter turned into MORE!

I have made the planters, and the planter holders, and that was lots of fun... But the more I made, the more I started to add to them! I made different colours and even added beads:

This is the first one, which ended up just being a pretty plant hanger!

But with longer ends this would be a great water bottle holder! Eureka!!!! Here is one I made for Jackie. It has lots of beads at the junctions.

These pics show how it can be used for small or large bottles! It will hold pretty much anything!

Great for the girl on the go :)
When you don't feel like carrying anything but want to bring water! It's very important in the summertime and this is a great light weight solution! See how it also holds them upright. Great for kids or adults, a small bottle, or a big one! Take it with you on picnics too!

CRAFTINESS: Upside-down Planter continued

So I told you how to make the upside down planter... It's very easy! Well the hanger for it is very easy as well! I made a whole bunch of different sized ones out of different materials, and here are some step-by-step instructions:
Having a bottle helps until you get the pattern of making them. You also need 4 strands of string/ribbon about 2 times the length of the bottle you're using.

1. Tie two of the strands together in the middle so you have 2 knotted strands.
2. Take one strand from each knotted group and make a new knot. Do the same on the other side. Now you have made a square with 2 strings coming out of each knot. The square sides should be about an inch or a bit more long. The cap of the bottle will be going through this square.
Take one strand from the knot on the left and one from the knot on the right and make a new knot about 2 inches down. Rotate the bottle and do the same thing; one strand from the left, one from the right. The result will be 4 new knots, making 4 long triangles. Now repeat the whole thing again making 4 diamonds down the bottle!
Because of the way it's designed, this will now fit any sized bottle! water bottles, pop bottles, one litre sizes, or even cans!

Now carefully cut the end off the bottle.

The bottom will be put back in, but inverted. Poke a few holes in the bottom. This will let water pass easily through it.

Here is your hanger before the final stage of putting the plant in!

Growing strong!
BUT THAT"S NOT ALL!!!! In true Robin's Nest style, I have gone overboard and started making this idea into so much more....

CRAFTINESS: Upside-down Planting

Hanging upside down plants are all the rage now! When they came out on TV everyone wanted one but the container looked confusing and of course they only tell you enough to make you want it and not all the details! Well it is very easy to make your own now and here are some interesting ways:
First I will show you how I did mine this week. Probably the easiest way, if I do say so myself!

Using any plastic container, first cut an X along the enire bottom of the container. This is like any holder of this type; you push it in to hold, and then it keeps it's shape without coming back out. (Do not go over the edge up the side or it will want to fold outwards and the plant will fall out!) If you just left the X as it is the plastic would cut into your stem, so we want to trim the points off in the center to make an opening.

I made knotted holders for most of mine (left) so that they look nice, but support the bottom as well as the sides. It's not quite macrame, but if you don't want to do it this way I have also made one that is simply poking the string thru and hanging it! (Use 3-4 strings, 2 is not enough) I am hoping the container is strong enough for this hanging method! The wet soil does get quite heavy! If you do try the knotted method, make sure you leave the bottom open.... If you make it like a regular hanger with the knots in a tassle at the bottom it will be in the way of your plant and look silly : P

I loosened the soil of the plant to make it easier for inserting in the X without damaging the roots. When they come out of the little plastic tray of 4 seedlings they are formed into little rectangular cubes; you know the ones.... Trying to do it with that big clump isn't easy and it would end up falling apart anyway! So free the roots from all the loose soil and then gently shove it all thru the hole by pushing the flaps of the X in. Then you have only the stem thru the hole (left) and the roots on the inside. (right)

Then just fill it up! When it is full of soil you will want to add water. The soil is loose so make sure you do this outside or over the sink! Put a lot of water in so that all the soil gets really wet! It will start to pour out the bottom of the container but that's ok for now. Once all the soil is wet it will be packed better and it won't drain like that later. (theoretically; I wouldn't suggest hanging it over something important, just in case!) If you put the lid on loosely or poke holes in it, the soil will retain most of the moisture and then you can just spritz it when you think it needs some water! Hang it in the amount of sun it needs, depending on what plant it is and watch it flourish!
I like this hanging method because it stops the need for staking the plants or the risk of them drooping and breaking under the weight! I have yet to see how well these containers will do under the weight of fruits/veggies, but time will tell! This will also hopefully solve 2 problems for me; 1. I have very bad soil in my back yard that I try to fix every year! (and the neighbours fence blocks the sun so area is limited) and 2. Indoor plants tend to get eaten by my cat!
I love to plant and sometimes get impatient and ahead of myself, so I didn't even bother decorating these containers :) of course you could paint them, put covers on them or anything you can imagine! Here are some other examples (I might try these) for you to try and let your gardening imagination go wild! (these are good for basement apartments and other places where floor space is limited or doesn't let enough light in!)
Using old pop/water bottles ~ I am defo trying this container next since I am about to start wreaking my good food containers! These are good for outside and the bottom of the bottle is cut off and inverted with holes poked in them to catch water like a basin and filter it through the soil
Here are some that look pretty! She used cans with plastic lids, like powder tins. Putting an X in the lid like I did, the removing the metal bottom, poking holes in it and then taping it back on afterwards

I love this idea! The flowers are cool, but imagine having fresh herbs growing right in your kitchen and yet out of the way! they look nice and would smell great! I would cover them in matching tea towels to go with the kitchen decor!

CRAFTINESS: Valentine's Craft Party of Love

In February we had the first Craft Class of the year! Some great friends came and we had crafts and snacks, fun and loot bags too :)

The ice in the "punch drunk love" punch is red & pink hearts. The love potion #9 is pink cream soda and it's written on the back of the plastic label. There are chocolate and marble cupcakes, and the marble ones are chocolate cake and white cake that has been made pink!

First we all got some loving face paint on! ribbons and hearts and sparkles! While that was going on the kids did some colouring of the valentine themes printouts I made up! I thought that would be fun, but I had no idea it would keep them so occupied! Maybe there should be a colouring party! : )
Then on with the crafts!

Also prepared ahead of time were some salt dough shapes. This is a fun craft for the kids to make the dough and use the cookie cutters, but it takes 2 hours to bake, so having them ready to paint was so much easier! Once again, this was a big hit! Some kids painter 3 or 4 shapes to give to their family and friends! we used lots of colours, glued some together, and even attached broach backs or ribbon to them! We could have done this for hours too!

Next we got some foam hearts and cut an opening to make them into picture frames. We attached a rectangle of foam to the back to hold the picture in and then decorated the heart with other foam mini hearts, shapes, paint, and conversation-sweethearts. We added pretty ribbons to most of these as well, to be hung on walls.

The next craft involved some steps. First we had purple and white plasticine which we kneaded and then pressed into small plastic cups. Into that we stuck a green pipecleaner. On the pipecleaner were 2 green hearts, impaled through the point to look like leaves. At the top of the "stem" was glued a fuzzy heart with a pink tiny clothes pin on the back to turn the whole thing into a photo holder! (I used mine to hold my business card)

One last craft for those who stayed extra late... Similar to the heart leaves, 4 red hearts made of construction paper. A lolli-pop is stuck through a small hole in the point of each heart and they are fanned out to form a yummy flower.

At the end, everyone got a loot bag full of treats, a valentine pencil and big heart eraser and then everyone picked out a pin broach that I had made.

CRAFTINESS: Light Shade

The light in my kitchen has no cover. It is one of those bulbs that would normally be covered by a glass globe of some sort, but I suspect the painters may have smashed it before I moved in and it was never replaced... So I saw a similar idea to this and loved it so much I had to try it! I used a balloon and wall paper paste and did this paper mache style. I first dyed the paper doilies using a spray bottle and purple watery dye (see the tissue paper dying in another entry for more info) and when they were dry I covered the balloon, making sure to overlap every one in a pleasing way. This makes it look nice, have different shades of colour, and also keep it all together! after the whole thing dried on the balloon (about 24 hours) I popped it and the form was left. I then slipped it over the existing fixture holding the bulb and it made a nice muted light :) SUCCESS! Hope you like it! feel free to comment or ask questions!

CRAFTINESS: Premier Entry

If you like the crafts on here and want more, or want an easier way to look and share them, go to the Facebook page that my friend Devin & I run... It's called D & R's Craft Estate... a fun place to live and create :) http://www.facebook.com/#!/home.php?sk=group_173231356046916&ap=1
You and everyone can share, converse and upload ideas there about what you're making or things you have found! I am also putting some on here and some may not be on there! So follow both! YAAAAAY! silliness abounds!

Film Review: MirrorMask (2005)

MirrorMask is a great film written by Dave McKean & Niel Gaiman based on his drawings and filmed in England. Starring Stephanie Leonidas, Jason Barry, Rob Brydon & Gina McKee.
A small family runs a strange night circus. Helena is a 15 yr old daughter who loves to draw and adds her pictures to her wall which looks like a universe of dark and light. Helena's mother gets sick and everything is in jeopardy! Everyone might have to shut down their whole way of life. Following some fellow performers,  Helena suddenly finds herself in a kind of fantasy world! A world where everyone wears a mask. But she gets mistaken for someone else! Someone who is wanted by the kingdom and persued by eveyone. There are strange people to meet and even stranger creatures! Rules to follow and lessons to be learned; mainly, "remember what your mother told you"! Helena finds herself on a quest to discover the MirrorMask which will save the Queen and determine the battle between light and dark. But there are twists and turns as Helena's real life seems to be turning upside down with her not being able do do anything about it!

It is quite an adventure to go along with! I already said it's great! I love this movie and have seen it a few times. It has interesting characters and strange techniques of film and costume to discribe aspects that you normally wouldn't see! It's a little bit steampunk, a little bit comicbook, and a lot dreamlike! I would like to recommend this movie to everyone, however I can think of a lot of people who would be very confused by this film! There is quite a bit of nonsense and some silly things... But that's what makes it fun!

Film Review: When Night is Falling (1995)

Canadian lesbian cult-classic from 1995.... This movie stars Pascale Bussieres as Camille Baker & Rachael Crawford as Petra Soft. Camille is a professor at a catholic university along with her fiance Martin (played by Henry Czerny; This role made me see him as evil no matter what he plays as! He is usually the bad guy like as Kittridge in Mission: Impossible) While Martin is away she has a chance meeting with the charismatic Petra, a performer it the alternative Sirkus of Sorts run by Timothy (Canadian director Don McKellar) and his wife Tory (Canadian actress Tracy Wright 1959-2010)... It's a bit like Cirque du Soleil!

Petra makes a pass at Camille but she says she just wants to be friends! However, once the idea is in Camille's head she starts to fantasize about being intimate with Petra. When Petra comes a'courting, Camille gives in and kisses her! They eventually do have a friendly outing together, but Petra wants more. This causes too much tension and they have a bit of an argument. When Camille goes to the carnival to apologize the two woman end up engaging in one of the most romantic and graphic love scenes the CBC has ever aired! LOL

Of course all this creates turmoil for the religious school teacher's life and Petra is then in limbo of what will happen! Well I won't tell you the end, but suffice it to say it's a great movie! This is one of my favorite gay romance movies (along with Heavenly Creatures and Lilies) of all times! The music is great, composed by Lesley Barber, former partner of the director, Patricia Rozema.
Interesting Facts: Barber also composed the music for the TV cartoon Little Bear, drawn by Maurice Sendak!.... Rozema also wrote this film!.... Rachael Crawford started her acting career in 1988 in the Canadian high school drama "9B", which I loved!!!!.... Pascale Bussieres has been in 40 films, most of which are french since she was born in Montreal, Quebec!....
